Finding peace and quiet in the midst of our busy lives and fast-paced world can be a foreign concept to us. We feel naked without our cell phones attached to us constantly, utterly disconnected from the world around us when there’s no internet access, and heaven forbid we forget our headphones for the ride on the bus! In a world where nearly everything has an on / off switch — it’s sometimes tricky to find our own on / off switch — and more often than not, we feel like we have to be ‘on’ and in super-human mode, all of the time. It’s exhausting. The scary part is we don’t even realize just how exhausting it is on our minds, body and spirit.

I know what you’re thinking: Wait — you mean me? I’m allowed to actually relax? Do you have any idea of what I have on my plate today?

This thought of finding a moment of zen isn’t intended to produce anxiety and add yet another thing to add to your to-do list.  In fact, quite the opposite. The purpose of finding a moment of zen is for your benefit — and will actually increase your overall level of productivity and efficiency, de-stress you and enrich your day-to-day life with an overall sense of peace and balance.

I challenge you this week to create a moment of zen for yourself — whether you only have 5 minutes or an entire 30 minutes — you deserve it.  Find a time and place that works for you and your daily routine and create your own unique moment of zen. Whether it’s striking a few meditative poses,  taking a weekly yoga class, or promising yourself not to be refreshing your email every 10 seconds while on your coffee break — you will benefit greatly from it.

If you are still saying, “I have no time for zen time, I have so much to do.”  Think about this… it is proven that a rested mind and body work more efficiently than one that is not.  And quieting the noise in our day to day life leaves room for a productive thought process that will in turn allow you to get things done more quickly and efficiently leaving more time for “me time.”

Truthfully, many of the looks we see strutting gracefully down the runway aren’t always the most flattering and are rarely practical. Contrary to popular belief, these looks aren’t necessarily intended to be replicated to a T and worn in your day-to-day, but rather are intended to inspire, entertain and provoke thought. Fashion Week is about celebrating an artist’s boldness in charting new territory and exploring the limitless possibilities of fashion as a form of art. Whether the designer’s intent is to create something unusual and seemingly ridiculous in order to get their names in the press or an unintentional fashion faux pas caused by long, sleepless hours and the pressure put on a designer to come up with something so fantastic it will put them on the map — I say kudos to those who are bold and brave enough to trust their creative instincts and funkyfierce imagination.

Even I have been known to design a look that one might not characterize as wearable, or to create a statement color that seems like only someone like Betsey Johnson would wear. As a matter of fact, I recently created a bright electric purple lip color called Publicity Stunt — were my intentions to simply create a unique shade of  purple lip color that speaks to my artistic nature or were my intentions for it to be what the name implies… a publicity stunt? Although my only intentions were to stay true to my creative expression as an artist I may have insinuated otherwise with a clever name that would attract a little extra attention  And who doesn’t mind a little extra attention every once in awhile?
